A man was killed in a house he built in southwest Michigan after he tried to invade the home with an axe and knife.
The Michigan State Police said in a statement the suspect, 24-year-old William Thomas, “suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest during the attempt.”
He was pronounced dead at a hospital, the Michigan Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.
Michigan state police Sgt. John Houghton said in an earlier statement that Thomas “suffers from mental illness” and had “no history of prior criminal conduct.”
He’s a member of the Lacey County, Michigan, community, where the home he was charged with burglarizing was located.
The suspect, who was a member in good standing of a local church, had been in the Lacy County Jail on charges of burglary and criminal mischief, and a criminal record, the police said.
